Multiple myeloma is a type of cancer that affects plasma cells, which are a type of white blood cell responsible for producing antibodies to help the body fight infection. In multiple myeloma, abnormal plasma cells grow uncontrollably in the bone marrow, crowding out normal blood cells and impairing the production of healthy antibodies.
Multiple myeloma is considered a hematologic malignancy, or blood cancer, and it is characterized by the accumulation of abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow and the production of abnormal proteins, known as monoclonal proteins or M proteins. These abnormal proteins can cause various complications, including bone damage, anemia, kidney problems, and impaired immune function.
