Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It is primarily caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection. Cervical cancer typically develops slowly over time, starting with pre-cancerous changes known as cervical dysplasia or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN).
